One of the most expensive and critical elements of your home is the roof. Without a properly functioning roof, entire sections of your home can be exposed to the elements.
To prevent that from happening, you should have your roof inspected regularly to check for any problems or issues that could arise. At RJW Exteriors, we provide professional inspections for customers throughout New Jersey, but there are also some things that you can do yourself to keep your roof in good shape.
How to Make Your Roof Last Longer
With just a ladder and a few simple tools, there are many things you can do to make sure that you don’t need a roof replacement anytime soon.
One of the easiest things you can do to keep your roof in the best shape possible is regularly clean all debris off it. Depending on the layout and structure of your roof, you may have several areas where branches, leaves, and pine needles tend to pile up. Along pipes and in valleys where two sections of your roof come together are two common areas where debris can pile up.
It is important that these piles of debris are not allowed to remain for long periods of time. The larger one of these debris piles gets, the more moisture it will collect, and the more damage it will be able to do to your roof.
You should be able to scout out where debris is piling up by checking from different vantage points on the ground, maybe even using binoculars. Once you become familiar with your roof, you will learn all the areas where debris piles up.
Check for Missing Shingles
You should be able to locate missing or broken shingles by looking from different locations on the ground — and even from upstairs windows, depending on your roof’s layout. While a single missing shingle may not be a serious problem in itself, it can cause further issues if left unchecked.
Once you find shingles that are missing or need replacing due to damage or warping, you can install new ones with just a little roof cement.
Routinely cleaning your gutters is another simple step you can take to make sure that you don’t need a new roof installation too soon. Storms and wind can lead to debris building up in your gutters. That buildup then blocks the flow of water, which gets stuck and can end up sitting on the lower parts of your roof.
Be sure to check your gutters both before and after any major storm so that they can handle whatever weather comes next.
